ArtCenter College of Design welcomes students from a variety of academic and professional pathways as transfer students into our Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Science degree programs. Transfer students make up about 30% of our new student population, with academic experience transferring in from accredited institutions all over the world. It is important to start your transfer process early in your college search as it can be advantageous for many students to transfer to ArtCenter prior to earning an Associate of Arts degree.
As an art and design college, ArtCenter’s programs have a different structure from traditional four-year and community colleges. Students take coursework specific to their major from the very first term through the last term of undergraduate study (not only in the final two years), and there is no semester at ArtCenter where a student takes only general education classes. For these reasons, transferring looks a bit different here, and you may be ready to apply to ArtCenter sooner than you think.
Whether you have just started community college, or if you have previously earned a degree, there is a path for you to apply to ArtCenter. Here’s how to get started:
At ArtCenter, there are no undeclared applicants, and you apply directly to a major with specific application portfolio requirements. By reviewing your major’s portfolio requirements, you can determine whether you may need to create new work or build additional skills.
Each major also has a unique curriculum, and classes specific to your major start in the very first term of your program. By reviewing your major’s curriculum (or “Transfer by Major section”) below, you can understand the specialized nature of our programs and what courses taken elsewhere may be applicable to your major.
Transfer students are encouraged to connect with our Admissions Counselors early in the college search process to learn more about our programs, receive important portfolio feedback, and discuss academic history and future professional goals. Our goal is to help maximize your current studies and optimize your application so you can apply to ArtCenter and complete our program as efficiently as possible.
Our Associate Director of Transfer Admissions, Jocelynn Nobouphasavanh, is here to support you throughout the transfer process. You can contact her at transfer@artcenter.edu or text 626 389-2378 with any questions.
ArtCenter does not require specific college courses to be completed prior to applying or transferring. The online application can be completed in the following steps:
At ArtCenter, financial aid and scholarships are based on financial need and merit of the applicant. For US domestic students, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be completed for consideration of scholarships and financial aid. We recommend submitting the FAFSA when you submit your application. Learn more and complete your application at fafsa.gov. Please also indicate in your online application that you would like to be considered for financial aid and scholarships.
ArtCenter accepts transfer applicants for Fall and Spring entry terms. We encourage you to submit your application by the Priority Date to allow for timely consideration of transfer credit, financial aid, and scholarships. For Entertainment Design applicants, submit your application by the Priority Deadline.
If accepted, you will receive your entry term level in your acceptance letter and a preliminary transfer credit evaluation via your applicant portal. Once accepted, your next steps would be:
To find out more about how transfer credit is evaluated and what types of classes may transfer, see policies below.
As part of the application review process, the Admissions Committee will evaluate your transcripts, and in the case of studio classes, your portfolio, to evaluate the transferability of your college credits.
Upon acceptance to ArtCenter, the acceptance letter will indicate the term level at which you’ve been admitted. A transfer credit evaluation report will be posted to your applicant account within approximately 1-2 weeks of your acceptance notification with detailed information about the transfer credit awarded. If no transfer credit is awarded, no evaluation report will be sent.
ArtCenter recognizes two types of transfer credits: credit for studio art classes, and credit for Humanities and Sciences (H&S) classes. Studio transfer credit, not Humanities and Sciences credit, determines the number of terms required for you to complete your degree. Advanced standing is awarded only if a student receives sufficient studio art credit to shorten the number of terms required for degree completion. Term level placement will be listed on your transfer credit evaluation and your acceptance letter.
A maximum of 60 units of studio and academic credits may be transferred in total from other accredited institutions.
Studio art/design classes are eligible to transfer with a grade of “B” or better from an accredited college if the course content closely resembles the requirements offered at ArtCenter and equivalent skills are demonstrated in the application portfolio. Program-specific H&S Courses are eligible to transfer with a grade of “B” or better from an accredited college if the course content closely resembles the requirements offered at ArtCenter. Elective H&S Courses may transfer based on the general categories below with a grade of “C” or better from an accredited college.
Transfer credit can be accepted from colleges or universities that are accredited by one of the six U.S. regional associations of schools and colleges— Higher Learning Commission (HLC), Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE), Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)—or by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). International programs will be evaluated on an individual basis.
ArtCenter uses a semester credit system. Transfer credit hours from institutions using other credit systems (quarter, ECTS, etc.) will be evaluated and recalculated for semester credit equivalency.
If accepted, it is the student’s responsibility to provide final official transcripts from all colleges attended and AP/IB/A Levels exams taken. Credit will not be awarded based on unofficial transcripts that were submitted to apply, courses in progress, or transcripts from colleges not previously disclosed on the application for admission. Please make sure they are sent in a sealed official envelope from each institution you have attended, or electronically via secure electronic transcript service prior to the start of Orientation.
All transfer credit must be finalized by the end of a student's entering term at ArtCenter. If a student has in-process credits prior to their enrollment at ArtCenter, then those credits are eligible for transfer. If a student attends another college after enrolling at ArtCenter, those classes will not be eligible for transfer. Students matriculated in ArtCenter’s degree program cannot use ArtCenter Extension courses to meet their degree requirements after enrollment.
View the specific studio requirements per major on the Course of Study page for the major you are interested in. More information is listed in the major section below.
Studio art/design classes are eligible to transfer with a grade of “B” or better from an accredited college if the course content closely resembles the requirements offered at ArtCenter and equivalent skills are demonstrated in the application portfolio.
Studio art credit is awarded based on a combination of portfolio work and prior college credit. It is never awarded solely on a listing of courses on a transcript. The Admissions Committee will determine whether similar content was covered in a comparable class based on the portfolio work. Portfolios and transcripts are evaluated for studio credit at the time of admission. A transfer student's overall length of program will be shortened only if one or more semesters of studio art transfer credit is awarded.
Studio courses taken through ArtCenter Extension, ArtCenter's non-degree continuing education program, are considered for transfer if the course is listed as transferable at the time of entry, is applicable to the major, and if a grade of “B” or better is achieved. Exceptions to the policy can be made only by the Admissions Committee based on the portfolio review. The transfer of these courses will depend on the admissions policy in effect at the time of entry to the degree program. Please contact an Admissions Counselor with questions regarding transfer eligibility of ArtCenter Extension courses.
In addition to credit for prior college courses, students may also be granted a maximum of 12 studio art credits based on professional work experience verified through a submitted portfolio (combined credits not to exceed 60 credits in total). Contact transfer@artcenter.edu for details on the formal submission process.
Depending on your major, a minimum of 45 Humanities and Sciences (H&S) credits are required for graduation. H&S classes are made up of Required H&S courses and Elective H&S courses.
Credits accepted for transfer must fall into these categories:
The number of classes required in each category varies by major (see your major section for more information), and a full description of types of classes is available from the Admissions Office. The number of H&S credits transferred typically does not affect the length of the program but will lighten the course load from term to term.
ArtCenter requires all students to take Writing Studio, an English composition course, as part of degree completion. Apart from the First Year Immersion program, students can receive transfer credit for Writing Studio by completing one of the following :
English for Multi-lingual Speakers, Creative Writing, and Literature courses are not eligible for Writing Studio credit. English courses taken at universities with a primary teaching language other than English are eligible for Humanities & Sciences elective credit only. ESL courses are not eligible for transfer credit. Classes taken at non-U.S. colleges in which the language of instruction is English will be evaluated on an individual basis. Any exception will be made on a case-by-case basis by the chair of Humanities and Sciences.
Due to the specialized topics covered, some required liberal arts and sciences courses can be taken only at ArtCenter. These vary by major. Requirements by major can be viewed below.
ArtCenter does not offer studio credit for any AP, IB, or A Level studio art or design classes. Official score reports should be sent to the Admissions office from the examination body.
Here are guidelines of what types of courses may transfer for ArtCenter’s various majors:

ArtCenter has relationships with many local community colleges. Review the transfer guidelines below and see a list of the upcoming Transfer Fairs we will be attending to connect with us in person.
No, there is not a separate application for applying as a transfer student. Students who have attended another college should complete the standard undergraduate application at artcenter.edu/apply. Transfer students are evaluated for studio credit based on their portfolio in addition to the grade earned. It may be helpful to include examples of work done from your courses as a part of your portfolio. Contact your Admissions Counselor if you have questions about what to include in your portfolio submission.
If you have completed high school or high school graduation equivalent and have attained any credits at the college level, you are potentially eligible to apply as a transfer. We recommend students reach out to Admissions early to select the right courses to take if they are considering transferring. The time to transfer also depends on the readiness of your portfolio and the level you are seeking. A portfolio review is often helpful to determine your readiness.
No, as we are an art and design school, not a state or liberal arts school, our curriculum is structured differently. Most programs do have allowances for general education elective courses from similar areas, however we advise reviewing your major’s specific requirements to determine if IGETC is applicable.
A maximum of 60 semester units of studio and academic credits may be transferred from another accredited institution. We want to make sure you take many of the crucial classes that make an ArtCenter education unique.
Every major at ArtCenter requires an English Composition course (Writing Studio), which can be transferred in with a grade of “B” or better, so that is a good place to start. Beyond that, each major has a unique set of degree requirements, so check your major’s summary above and contact your Admissions Counselor for specific studio suggestions.
Transfer credit can be accepted from colleges or universities that are accredited by one of the six regional associations of schools and colleges—Middle States (MASAC), New England (NEASC), Higher Learning Commission (HLC), Northwest (NWCCU), Southern (SASAC), Western (WASC). International programs will be evaluated on an individual basis and confirmed with the Ministry of Education for the region.
It is not required that you earn an Associate’s degree before transferring to ArtCenter. We recommend reaching out to Admissions to get on a pathway that will maximize your transferrable credits and help you understand your financial aid opportunities, if relevant.
ArtCenter accepts transfer applications in the Fall and Spring term application cycles on a rolling admission basis. For some majors and based on your potential transfer credits, it may be advantageous for you to apply for a specific term. Please meet with Admissions to discuss the transfer plan that would work best for you.
You will receive your term level standing in your acceptance letter and your preliminary Transfer Credit Evaluation within 1-2 weeks of acceptance. Your term standing will indicate how many terms you can expect to complete your degree.
ArtCenter refers to our students by their term standing or the semester level that a student is entering. For example, first term and second term would be the first and second semester of the first year. If a student has completed all courses in a term, they advance to the next term and receive a higher level placement.
Some students may receive studio credit for classes located at different term levels in the curriculum, in which case they will be advanced a term if they receive enough studio transfer credits to shorten their time to degree, even if they still might need to take a class or two in an earlier term level.
ArtCenter does not have a specific transfer GPA requirement that applicants must reach in order to apply; however, we do prefer to see strong academic rigor reflected in transcripts. Once attending ArtCenter, students are expected to maintain at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA for classes taken at ArtCenter in order to maintain scholarships.
ArtCenter reviews an application holistically and takes a student’s full transcript, application and portfolio into account when making determinations. If you have specific concerns about your transcript or grades, your Admissions Counselor can help you determine how best to present your circumstances in your application.
Transfer students can be considered for the First Year Immersion program, although this program is probably best suited towards students that have not taken a lot of studio credits in college and are still searching for their best fit major. The preliminary transfer credit evaluation is limited and will be formally reviewed a second time once a student has selected the specific major to complete their degree.
